Simple, Yet Hard ...
This book was created especially for the Singles program and has been submitted.
"Simple Blueprint for Short Story Success"
"Great short story about short stories"
"Brilliant book about how to write short stories"
The short story is deceptively simple to write but frustratingly hard to master. It requires the ability to distill an entire story--all of its emotion, character development, and action--into a few thousand words. Due to its length, writers do not have the luxury of a long buildup or character development. You have to do more with less.
That said, it is something you can learn.
This eBook contains creative exercises and a step-by-step guide to writing a short story. It also includes a "Practical Application" section for most of the steps, where you will develop a sample story of your own. You will generate a story idea, a character, and follow the steps outlined in the book to see how the steps are applied.
"The author gives clear step-by-step instructions on how to get started,
and how to develop a full-blow story in a small package. He explains not
only how to do this by why it is essential to write short stories in a
certain way for maximum impact."
Here's a peek inside the Table of Contents
- Introduction
- Step 1Begin at the Beginning
- Step 2 Write by the Numbers
- Step 3 Avoid the Droopy Middle
- Step 4 Keep Track of Dialogue and Gestures
- Step 5 Write a Satisfying Climax and Ending
- Step 6 Consider Your Space Constraints
- Things to Remember
This ebook focuses on just the writing process itself. Its intention is to allow you to see how it is done and to follow along. And by following the steps, to produce a short story of your own.
"To conclude, the book includes practice exercises - not some airy-fairy
academic waste of time, but real hands-on exposure to the development of
an actual short story. That alone is worth getting the book for."
There would subsequently be other phases the story has to go through before it can be published, but that would be another story for another day.
How to Write Short Stories in 6 Easy Steps edition by KS Tan Reference eBooks
Every month or so I skim through the latest offerings in the "how to" writing category. I've bought (shhhh! don't tell my husband) so many I'm embarrassed to admit how many I've bought - - I probably have the equivalent of a vacation home on my Kindle. Over the years, I've read in the ballpark of, if I'm being conservative, 125 books dealing with writing. Apparently, I've fallen victim to the trap of reading about writing much more than I actually write. Last week I purchased this ebook and would recommend it without hesitation. It simply and succinctly guides you throught writing a short story. If you are a totally new writer this info is invaluable. If you are more experienced, I still think you would find value in the book - as it functions as more of a checklist to make sure your story includes everything needed to make it perform. Even an experienced writer can sometimes overlook these basics. I feel my $2.99 was more than well spent and will certainly purchase more from KS Tan in the future.Product details

How to Write Short Stories in 6 Easy Steps edition by KS Tan Reference eBooks Reviews
This book was helpful but I think a better title would be 6 Tips for Writing Short Stories. The sections on starting a story and avoiding a boring middle were especially good but $4.99 for this very short guide is too much. $2.99 or even $1.99 would be a fairer price.
Excellent little book on writing short stories - easy to read, points are clear and logically presented.
I've been inspired to write several short stories, none of which I've finished. However, after reading "How to Write Short Stories" by KS Tan, I feel quite confident I'll not only finish the ones I've started, but now I have a blueprint to keep me on track in the future. It's hard to believe such a short book covered so many details. It gives clear steps and word count for each phase of a short story. It explains the 'saggy middle' and how to handle it.
My critique group says they love my stories, but hate that they never hear how they end. I believe now they can.
As a novelist, its difficult to move into the short story mind set. This book was very helpful, with excellent procedures and examples to get you started. This was a quick, easy read that got my thoughts turning. My only disappointment was the failure of the link for the template. However, the author provides contact information so it's just a matter of a right turn. I'm looking forward to the next book that provides the rest of the 6 phases for writing a short story. Let the ink flow.
The content was okay here, a little simplistic. Maybe this would be good for someone just getting started with writing, but if you have any amount of experience, this really won't further your craft. It's also very short. I was disappointed that there wasn't more since it was three bucks. It should have been $0.99. If it had been, my expectations may have been different.
Purchased this book less than an hour ago and already finished it! It's given me some clear directions in trimming down my current work into a short story format. The author has an engaging writing style and the pages flew by. Definitely a book I will refer to over and over.
Thanks for the help, and I'm going to take a look at what else you've got

I read and studied this book in an hour and came away with ideas and insights--how to move and develop a character, how to develop a plot. I'll be reviewing in future.
I didn't like the format. The six steps seemed random rather than a progression. "6 Easy Steps", as the subtitle promises, seems to offer a cookbook. This book isn't, and doesn't need to be. Writing is a complex process, which cannot be reduced to easy steps.
Worst to me was to find the author, on the final page, asking for reviews and even providing a link. This blows his credibility and professionalism. reviews were an exciting idea, giving the potential reader tremendous power in making good choices. The system falls apart because 5-star and 4-star reviews are given much too freely. Half of all books are below average. A 3-star should be typical, to be helpful in choosing books, with 4 and 5 stars reserved for what is really exceptional. Authors who beg for reviews--and this is distressingly common--are undermining the process.
